Did you know that it’s estimated that 10-20% of Canadian youth are affected by a mental illness or disorder?

Today is Child and Youth Mental Health Day; a day to remember children and young adults are still learning how to understand, label, and express their feelings. It’s a time to help them learn how to handle new emotions they might not have experienced before.

The past year has been hard on everyone but especially children and young adults. Their whole life structure has been altered and they may be experiencing new emotions that they might not recognize.

That’s why it’s so important to help children to understand and name their emotions. When we name our emotions, we can tame them. Especially the harder ones.

If you are looking for help with talking with your children or young adults about how they are feeling, talk to your family doctor. They can help connect you with resources and/or social workers to help you start the discussion.
